🎬 Reimagining the home of cinema for the next 26 million cinephiles.

The Challenge

In 2026, Letterboxd stands as the undisputed global town square for film lovers, having surpassed 26 million active users.

What started as a niche logging platform has evolved into a vibrant cultural movement, a place where people don’t just watch films, but discuss them, dissect them, fall in love with them, and build lifelong friendships around them.

Yet, while the community has grown exponentially in passion and scale, the desktop experience remained largely frozen in time.

Through extensive research, including user interviews, heatmaps analysis, competitor benchmarking, and deep dives into Reddit threads and community feedback, I identified a clear disconnect:

The interface felt dense, outdated, and functional rather than emotional.

Dense grids, flat cards, inconsistent visual hierarchy, and a lack of cinematic atmosphere made the platform feel more like a database than the celebratory space for cinema it had become.

Users frequently complained about information overload, poor scannability, and an overall experience that no longer matched the sophistication and emotional investment of its audience.

My Role

As a UI/UX Designer, I took on the ambitious task of redesigning Letterboxd’s entire desktop experience from the ground up.

The project focused on three core experiences:

  • Guest Mode Landing Page (pre-login)

  • Member Mode Landing Page (logged-in)

  • Join / Sign Up flow

The objective was clear:

create a modern, scalable, and emotionally resonant interface that honors Letterboxd’s unique community-driven identity while preparing the platform for its next chapter of growth.

Research & Discovery

Before touching a single pixel, I conducted thorough research:

  • Analyzed current user pain points through Reddit, X, and Letterboxd’s own forums

  • Studied successful cinematic platforms and modern social networks

  • Identified key moments of friction in onboarding, discovery, and daily engagement

The research revealed that users wanted three things above all:

  1. A more cinematic and immersive first impression

  2. A truly personalized experience once logged in

  3. A frictionless and inviting onboarding process

The Vision

My vision was to transform Letterboxd from a “film logging tool” into a digital cinema lobby, elegant, atmospheric, passionate, and full of discovery.

The redesign had to feel as emotional and immersive as the films it celebrates, while maintaining the authentic, slightly rebellious, and community-first soul that made Letterboxd special.

Design Approach & Key Solutions

1. Cinematic Guest Mode Landing Page

I completely reimagined the first impression.

Using high-impact hero imagery, refined glassmorphism, modular bento-style feature sections, and improved content hierarchy, the new landing page immediately communicates the joy, community, and cinematic magic of Letterboxd.

The goal was to turn curious visitors into engaged users within seconds.

2. Personalized Member Mode Experience

For logged-in users, the homepage became truly personal.

I designed a warm, stats-driven hero, followed by “Your Recent Logs”, “Friends Activity”, “Up Next from Your Watchlist”, and tailored content sections.

The experience shifts from generic discovery to meaningful engagement and retention.

3. Modern & Frictionless Join/Sign Up Flow

I redesigned the entire onboarding experience with prominent social login options (Apple & Google), cleaner form fields, better visual guidance, and a much more inviting aesthetic, moving away from the dated, form-heavy layout of the original.

Design System Highlights

To bring this vision to life, I developed a cohesive and thoughtful design system specifically tailored for Letterboxd’s cinematic identity:

  • Refined Glassmorphism

I applied a consistent and sophisticated glassmorphism treatment across the entire interface.

By carefully balancing blur, transparency, and subtle borders, I created a sense of depth and layering that makes the UI feel modern and premium, while maintaining the dark, moody atmosphere perfect for a film platform.

  • Cinematic Visual Language

Every visual decision was guided by the language of cinema. I paid special attention to lighting, contrast, poster imagery, and composition to ensure the interface doesn’t just display films. it celebrates them.

The use of dramatic lighting, strategic negative space, and carefully selected typography creates an immersive experience that feels like stepping into a sophisticated cinema lobby.

  • Clear Information Hierarchy & Breathing Room

One of the biggest issues with the original design was information overload.

I introduced generous breathing room and a much clearer visual hierarchy, allowing users to scan content quickly and focus on what matters most, whether discovering new films, reading reviews, or engaging with their friends’ activity.

  • Unified Button System & Micro-details

I created a unified button system that brings consistency across Guest Mode, Member Mode, and the Join flow.

From the prominent green CTA buttons to the elegant ghost-style secondary buttons, every interactive element was designed with intention.

Small micro-details, such as refined shadows, hover states (in concept), and subtle focus indicators, add a layer of polish and premium feel throughout the experience.

  • Dark Cinematic Color Palette

I crafted a rich, dark color palette that enhances the movie-watching mood.

Deep blacks and charcoals serve as the foundation, while strategic accents of Letterboxd’s signature green and soft neutrals create contrast and guide the user’s attention without breaking the immersive atmosphere.

The Result

The final redesign transforms Letterboxd from a functional film logging platform into a truly cinematic digital destination, elegant, immersive, and built for the next generation of cinephiles.

By respecting the platform’s authentic, community-driven DNA while introducing modern design principles, the new desktop experience feels both familiar and refreshingly contemporary.

Users now encounter a visually striking interface that matches the passion they bring to cinema.

The redesign significantly improves usability through better information hierarchy and breathing room, increases emotional connection through cinematic visuals and thoughtful details, and creates a scalable foundation ready to support Letterboxd’s continued growth well beyond 26 million users.

Most importantly, the interface no longer feels like it’s holding the community back, instead, it amplifies their love for film and makes every visit feel like stepping into a space built exclusively for them.

This project proved that even beloved platforms with strong cult followings can evolve their visual and functional identity without losing what made them special in the first place.
